The Best Quest Bar Flavor

Today’s post is about the “quest” I’ve been on over the month or so: my quest to figure out which is the best Quest Bar flavor.  If you eat protein bars, you’ve probably heard of Quest. Simply put, Quest bars are the tastiest, best-delivering protein bars I’ve found. THEY ARE SO GOOD. Plus, as a busy mom, I love that Quest bars can be tossed in a bag and eaten anywhere. Most of my favorite healthy eats require enough prep or refrigeration that on-the-go eating is tough. These bad boys can come with me pretty much anywhere I need to go or act as an awesome tide-me-over if I can see that my day won’t allow me to eat my meals at their normal time. They’re hands-down one of my favorite snack options.

I was able to round up 18 Quest bar flavors at the stores in my area (just two short of the 20 listed on the Quest website). Here’s a review of all the flavors I tried, ranked in order of how much I liked them. To be honest, a few were so-so. One was outright nasty. But 12 of the 18 were absolutely phenomenal. So, which is truly the best Quest Bar flavor? Read on for my ranking from worst Quest bar flavor to best.

Quest Bar Giveaway!

ALSO: want to win a free box of one of my favorite flavors? I let the folks over at Quest know that I was doing a review of their bars, and they were cool enough to send me a sample box of my favorite flavor of bar. How awesome is that? And since I already have an embarrassingly large stash of Quest bars for myself, I thought I’d get this box out to one of my readers. 🙂

This week I’m giving away a 12-pack of the Cookie Dough Quest bars. You can enter to win it in three ways:

  1. Subscribe to my weekly email
  2. Like The Girl with the Green Apple on Facebook (here’s a link)
  3. Share any of my posts or pages that have resonated with you on your own Facebook page (I’ll give you one entry per post shared)

It’s funny: starting this blog was something I felt like I needed to do. I want anyone else whose struggles are similar to mine to have hope. I want to be a concrete example that THINGS CAN GET BETTER! You can change!

Hearing from some of you, both in comments and personal emails, has been so humbling. Seeing that people are actual reading this thing has blown me away. And it has given me motivation to try to get myself out there so that the message of hope I’m trying to spread can reach more of the people who need it. This little giveaway is an effort to spread the word about The Girl with the Green Apple and treat one of you to something healthy that I personally love.

You can rack up entries starting today (Monday August 22nd) through Sunday evening (August 28th) at 9:00 p.m. MST. I’ll draw a winner over the weekend and announce the winner on my Facebook page on the morning of Monday the 29th.

This giveaway has ended, but watch for more giveaways in the future! I love when I can share some of my favorite healthy things with you guys. 🙂

17. Banana Nut Quest Bar

This was the one flavor I actually thought was gross. No, not just gross. Like, beyond horrible. My husband walked in the room as I was gagging on my first (and only!) bite. He took a whiff, wrinkled his nose, and declared, “It smells like foot.” I hadn’t put my finger on what it tasted like until that moment, but he was totally right. This one smells and tastes like a stinky, smelly FOOT. So, unless that’s your thing, pass on this flavor.

16. Lemon Meringue Quest Bar

I don’t really care for actual lemon meringue pie, so I knew my odds of liking this flavor were slim. A lemon protein bar is definitely not the norm, and it could be a fun change of pace, but it wasn’t my cup of tea.

15. Cinnamon Roll Quest Bar

This bar’s overly sweet, fakey cinnamon taste wasn’t great. To be fair, though, I’ve felt the same way about any other protein bar claiming to be cinnamon-roll flavored. It tasted more like a kind of odd snickerdoodle than a cinnamon roll, since in my mind a cinnamon roll by definition is hot from the oven and dripping with icing. I give this one a solid meh rating.

Fun fact: I lead a secret double life as a 70-year-old woman. Hehe. I play the organ for the congregation at my church and ate this one on my way out the door one Sunday to tide me over until I could come home and eat lunch.

14. Coconut Cashew Quest Bar

This is one that I could see a lot of people loving. It was a lot like the amazingly delicious Vanilla Almond Crunch flavor but with a coconuty taste mixed in. But I just don’t like coconut very much, so this one wasn’t my favorite.

13. Strawberry Cheesecake Quest Bar

This one tasted a lot like a strawberry Nutrigrain bar. Not a bad taste at all by any means. However, it didn’t taste like strawberry cheesecake either. I’d classify this one as White Chocolate Raspberry’s homely little sister. It’s a pleasant, fruity take on a protein bar. However, it doesn’t even hold a candle to the similar-but-better #3-ranked White Chocolate Raspberry Quest bar (keep on reading!).

12. Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Quest Bar

This is a new Quest bar flavor released in August 2016, and it’s been getting rave reviews elsewhere on the web. It was really tasty, but I maintain my claim that it’s not AS tasty as some of the other Quest bars that have been around longer. What I loved about this bar was the addition of oats. The texture of this bar was fantastic, thanks not only to the oats but also the chunks of chocolate. But what I loved less was the cinnamon taste. It wasn’t nearly as overpowering as the Cinnamon Roll flavor, but I  prefer the simplicity of the Cookie Dough flavor to this one, which has a lot more going on flavor-wise. Still, though, this bar was really yummy and I’ll definitely have them from time to time for variety.

11. Chocolate Peanut Butter Quest Bar

This one was wonderful. The base is soft, rich, and chocolatey, which is always great by me. My only beef with this flavor is that I would have named it Chocolate PEANUT, not Chocolate Peanut BUTTER. Mentally I was gearing up to eat a Reese’s cup that was good for me, but the peanut taste was less sweet that I expected. The rich cocoa flavor blended nicely with straight-up raw peanut flavor instead—so think more like peanut M&M’s than Reese’s, if you will. It was a very yummy protein bar,  but just not quite what my taste buds expected.

10. Pumpkin Pie Quest Bar

I’ll admit: this one kind of weirded me out.  And honestly, opening the wrapper didn’t help. This one looks straight-up scary. But it was SO good! The core was a thick, chewy, graham-cracker-like cookie, and the whole thing was coated in what tasted like a pumpkin spice frosting and pie crust chunks. It looks like Pumpkin Pie was a limited edition bar that came out last fall, so I’m crossing my fingers that I see this one make the rounds again come autumn. Yum!

Don’t judge a protein bar by its cover! This was one tasty bedtime snack.

9. S’mores Quest Bar

Like the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor, this one is yummy, but I submit that it also needs a name change. When I think of S’mores, I think of ooey gooey marshmallows as the starring ingredient. These bars were a lot like the scrumptious cookie dough flavor but with an added hint of graham cracker taste. However, I didn’t see or taste anything marshmallowy in this bar. So mentally expect a delicious chocolate graham bar, not a s’more, and you’ll love this flavor.

8. Apple Pie Quest Bar

This was one is another “underdog” flavor that I didn’t expect to like.  I’ll admit that I thought it sounded bizarre and only bought it for the purposes of having reviewed all the flavors I could. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was absolutely killer! This apple pie bar is soft, cinnamony, and has a wonderfully real and natural apple taste. My only complaint is that the wrapper didn’t also contain a scoop of vanilla ice cream. 😉

7. Peanut Butter Supreme Quest Bar

This flavor tastes like peanut butter cookie dough! Ahhh.  It is definitely sweeter than a plain, raw peanut, but it isn’t TOO sweet either. I’d reach for this tasty, protein-packed bar over a handful of Nutter Butter cookies any day of the week.

6. Double Chocolate Chunk Quest Bar

I was excited about this one from the minute I opened the wrapper and saw the dark, fudgy color. This one doesn’t disappoint! It’s pure, chocolatey bliss that happens to be good for you. I felt like I was indulging in an honest-to-goodness brownie. YUM! Definitely a keeper.

5. Blueberry Muffin Quest Bar

Quest added this flavor to the lineup in September of 2016. I was able to run over to my local GNC to grab one, and I LOVED it! I was underwhelmed by their other recent new flavor, Chocolate Oatmeal Cookie, but thought this one was fantastic. It was soft and chewy with delicious chunks of both blueberry and something that seemed like white cake or strudel (like the topping of a muffin!). I’d love to keep these around the house as an on-the-go breakfast option to tide me over until I could sit down and eat a real meal. It really is so wonderfully reminiscent of an actual blueberry muffin. 🙂

4. Vanilla Almond Crunch Quest Bar

Putting these top 5 or so in order was tough because they were all so mind-blowingly great. This one truly is delicious. Imagine a soft, chewy, vanilla cookie infused with little bits of crunchy raw almond. I feel like a lot of the better-tasting protein bars, Quest and otherwise, involve chocolate. The few non-chocolate ones might be peanut butter based—which is also good. I’m all about chocolate, peanut butter, or both combined, but this is one of the best protein bars I’ve tried that features neither.

3. White Chocolate Raspberry Quest Bar

Much like the apple pie bar, this one surprised me. I thought it sounded strange, but holy cow! It was to die for. This one has a sweet, mild base filled with tons of chunks of both white chocolate and surprisingly fresh-tasting raspberries. It’s absolutely delicious. Quest’s White Chocolate Raspberry flavor is, hands-down, the yummiest fruit-flavored protein bar I’ve ever tried.

This one came to the pool with me. I wasn’t nice enough to share it with my kids when they asked . . .

2. Cookies N Cream Quest Bar

Ahhhh this one was good! This little guy is perfect for a day when you’re craving something processed and unhealthy—like, say, a stack of Oreos—but know you’d feel better if you didn’t indulge. With this flavor you can have your Oreos and eat them too.

1. TIE: Cookie Dough Quest Bar/Mint Brownie Quest Bar

Cookie Dough Quest Bars are AMAZING! This is seriously one of the yummiest protein bars I have ever, ever, ever tasted. Ever. It tastes like cookie dough. It looks like cookie dough. Its texture is like cookie dough. It is chewy, sweet, indulgent, and fabulous, like cookie dough. Essentially, it’s like eating comfort food that happens to be amazingly healthy for you. This is the flavor of Quest bar I was a huge fan of before writing this post, and the one that made me want to see what other amazingness Quest had to offer. They are everything you have heard and more. Quest Cookie Dough bars are seriously incredible! But . . .

I’ll be honest: when I started writing this post, I assumed Cookie Dough would be in the #1 slot. I mean, how could it not be? I was shocked to not name it the outright winner, I’ll admit. But Mint Brownie Quest Bars are insane. I took one bite and almost died. It was seriously like a thick, fudgy, calorie-bomb mint brownie I’d mix up at home or buy at a bakery. But instead of being loaded with butter and sugar, these little guys are loaded with protein and fiber. WHAT?! I know.

And this one got eaten right after a workout. YUM.

Where Is the Cheapest Place to Get Quest Bars?

You guys had to know this was coming, right? I’m budget-conscious enough to do my research before shopping. I’ve found that Quest bars tend to cost about $2.50 apiece at grocery stores. That’s not crazy, but it adds up if you eat protein bars regularly. Amazon is the cheapest place I’ve found to get Quest bars as long as you don’t mind getting boxes of 12 of one flavor (though some variety packs exist that give you 3 or 4 of a few different flavors). Bought this way, they come to right around $2.00 apiece. Below I’ve put the Amazon links for each of the tasty flavors:

Cookie Dough

Mint Brownie

Cookies N Cream

White Chocolate Raspberry

Vanilla Almond

Double Chocolate Chunk

Peanut Butter Supreme

Apple Pie

S’mores

Pumpkin Pie (these are only $17.99 for a box of 12, or $1.50 apiece. That’s as low as I’ve ever seen Quest bars!)

Chocolate Peanut Butter

Strawberry Cheesecake
